Sensitive Tummies (Comfort)
Comfort Formula for Sensitive Tummies
Comfort formulas are designed for babies who are generally healthy but visibly uncomfortable after feeds — gassy, straining, unsettled in the evenings. They typically combine partially hydrolysed protein with reduced lactose and, in some recipes, a modified fat blend, to make each feed easier to process. Because digestive discomfort has many possible causes, talk to your pediatrician before switching: what looks like a formula problem is often something else.
What a Comfort formula changes
Three adjustments, usually made together:
Partially hydrolysed protein. The milk protein is broken into smaller fragments, which move through the stomach faster and are easier to break down.
Reduced lactose. Lactose content is lowered, though not eliminated. This can help babies with temporary difficulty processing the usual amount — which is common and usually resolves on its own.
Modified fat blend. Some Comfort recipes adjust the fat profile, often reducing or removing palm oil, which is associated with firmer stools in some babies.
The result is a formula engineered to pass through a small digestive system with less work. It remains nutritionally complete under EU rules.
When a Comfort formula might help
Parents typically look at Comfort formulas for a baby who is gaining weight normally and otherwise well, but who is:
- Passing a lot of wind, or straining and pulling their legs up
- Unsettled or crying for extended periods, often in the evening
- Uncomfortable and squirming after a feed
- Producing firmer stools than expected
Before you switch, rule out the simpler explanations. Feeding position, bottle teat flow rate, air swallowed during feeding, overfeeding, and preparation technique all cause the same symptoms and are easier to fix. Your pediatrician can help you work through these.
See a doctor promptly if your baby is not gaining weight, is refusing feeds, has blood in their stool, is vomiting forcefully, or has a rash alongside digestive symptoms. Those need assessment, not a different formula.
Comfort, HA and Anti-Reflux — which is which?
| Comfort | HA | Anti-Reflux | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Made for | Gas, fussiness, digestive discomfort | Reducing allergy risk in at-risk babies | Frequent spit-up and reflux |
| Protein | Partially hydrolysed | Partially hydrolysed | Usually intact |
| Key feature | Reduced lactose, modified fats | Hydrolysed protein | Thickening agent |
| Organic certified | No | No | No |
If your baby is comfortable but simply spits up a lot, Anti-Reflux is the more relevant category. If allergy is the concern, HA is. If neither quite fits, organic goat milk formula is the gentler option that is certified organic.
