Hypoallergenic (HA) Baby Formula

Hypoallergenic formula — usually labelled HA — uses milk protein that has been broken down into smaller fragments, which makes it less likely to be recognised as an allergen by a baby’s immune system. It is designed for babies with a family history of allergy, and it is not a treatment for a diagnosed cow’s milk protein allergy. If your baby has been diagnosed, your pediatrician will prescribe an extensively hydrolysed or amino acid formula instead. Always talk to your pediatrician before starting HA formula.

What HA formula actually is

In a standard formula, milk proteins are intact. In an HA formula, they are partially hydrolysed — enzymatically broken into shorter chains that a baby’s immune system is less likely to flag. The formula remains nutritionally complete and meets the same EU standards for infant nutrition.

The key word is partially. There are three tiers:

Partially hydrolysed (HA). Available without prescription, intended to reduce allergy risk in babies with a family history of atopy. This is what you will find on this page.

Extensively hydrolysed (eHF). Proteins broken down much further, for babies with diagnosed CMPA. Prescribed and monitored by a doctor.

Amino acid formula (AAF). No intact protein at all, for severe allergy. Prescribed by a doctor.

Who HA formula is for

HA formula is generally considered for babies who are not exclusively breastfed and have a first-degree relative — parent or sibling — with a diagnosed allergic condition such as eczema, asthma, hay fever or food allergy. It is a risk-reduction approach, not a treatment.

HA formula is not appropriate if: your baby has a diagnosed cow’s milk protein allergy, is showing signs of an allergic reaction, or has been prescribed a specific formula by a doctor. In those cases, follow your pediatrician’s instructions.

Guidance on preventive HA use has changed over the years and varies between countries. This is genuinely a decision to make with your pediatrician, not one to make from a product page.

Why European HA formula

The brands here are made in Europe under EU Regulation 2016/127, which applies the same compositional requirements — mandatory DHA, lactose-first carbohydrate rules, restricted added sucrose — to hypoallergenic formulas as to standard ones. European HA formulas also commonly include GOS/FOS prebiotics and, in some ranges, live cultures.

On organic certification: HA formulas are not EU-organic certified. The hydrolysis process required to break down the protein falls outside organic processing rules. If you want an organic formula, you are looking at our organic cow’s milkor organic goat’s milk ranges instead. HA products are made by the same European manufacturers, to the same EU safety and nutritional standards, but they do not carry the organic leaf — and any retailer telling you otherwise is wrong.
