Anti-Reflux (AR) Baby Formula
Anti-Reflux formula — usually shortened to AR — contains a natural thickening agent, most often carob (locust bean) gum, that makes the feed heavier in the stomach and less likely to come back up. It is intended for babies who spit up frequently but are otherwise healthy and gaining weight normally. AR formula is a food for special medical purposes and should be used on your pediatrician’s advice, not started independently.
How Anti-Reflux formula works
A thickener is added to the recipe — typically carob bean gum, sometimes a starch. Prepared, the formula is noticeably thicker than a standard one. That extra weight helps the feed stay in the stomach rather than travelling back up the oesophagus.
Practical consequences worth knowing before you buy:
- You may need a faster-flow teat. Thickened formula does not pass easily through a standard newborn teat.
- Preparation matters more. Follow the manufacturer’s water temperature and mixing order exactly — AR formulas often specify a different temperature to standard ones, because the thickener behaves differently.
- It is not a “top up”. Do not add thickener to a normal formula yourself, and do not mix AR with another formula unless your pediatrician instructs you to.
Spit-up versus reflux
Almost all babies spit up. The muscle at the top of the stomach is still developing, and milk comes back up easily — especially in the first four to six months. This is normal, and it usually resolves on its own as the baby grows and starts sitting upright.
AR formula is for the middle ground: a baby spitting up often enough to be a real nuisance, but who is thriving, feeding well and comfortable.
Talk to your pediatrician before using AR formula, and see them promptly if your baby:
- Is not gaining weight, or is losing weight
- Refuses feeds or arches and cries during them
- Vomits forcefully, or vomits green or bloody fluid
- Has a persistent cough, wheeze or breathing difficulty
- Seems in pain rather than merely messy
Those signs point to something that needs medical assessment. AR formula is not the answer to them.
Things worth trying first
Your pediatrician will often suggest these before a formula change, because they frequently work:
- Smaller, more frequent feeds
- Keeping your baby upright for 20–30 minutes after feeding
- Winding more often during the feed
- Checking the teat flow rate — too fast means more swallowed air
- Reviewing feeding position
